Being Holy Before the Lord

Writer's picture: Tiffani G.Tiffani G.

We each have our own definitions and opinions on what we feel holiness is. To some, holiness is wearing a skirt, to others holiness is not showing any parts of their skin, being completely covered. Either way, the best angle to determine what is holy and what is right is to read through His Scriptures and allow them to reveal to us what The Holy declares as holy.

“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”- 1 Peter 1:14-16

If we had to sum down holiness to a simple set of words it would be ‘to avoid evil’. Avoiding evil encompasses every single sin that would disregard and keep us from being holy before the Lord.  It is in fact, holiness that draws us to Him, making us be more like Him, and evil that draws us further away from Him and closer to the evil one.

Here is what I felt the Lord share with me from His view of being holy before Him.

  1. Serve no other gods

As written in the 10 commandments, the Lord commands us to serve no other gods. Serving other gods turns us away from Him, because there is no way that we can bow down to a lesser thing and yet still regard the Most High. Serving other gods has been an evil known to man ever since the fall of Adam. This was the sin that the Israelites often repeated against God, causing them to be driven out of the promised land and defeated in many victories.

If you would like to be holy before the Lord, then you must put away and get rid of all other false gods and serve Him with your whole heart.

  1. Love Him with your whole heart

Loving Him with our whole hearts is essentially a foundation in being holy before Him. If we love Him rightly, we will fulfill all other areas. Loving Him fully will keep you from sinning or even being drawn to do evil. Your heart will burn so much for Him that you will choose to do right even in the face of evil. As you love Him, temptation will fade and become less and less strong.   Loving Him will keep you away from serving other gods. When we love someone, we think of them often, seek to do no harm against them, and are obedient to them in the sense that if they ask us something, we do our best to fulfill that request. This is how it should be when you are loving the Lord with your whole heart.

“And you must love the Lord your God  with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5

“‘Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?’ Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.’”

  1. Love others

A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.’”

The Last commandment leads us right into this one. Jesus stated that loving God and loving others are the two most important commandments. We must love others because God loves them and if we love Him, then we will love what He loves (His creations). Often times I find myself staring into the gaze of someone, not in a creepy way, but because I can feel the love of God for them. I can feel that my Father loves them and it cause me to have a love for them as well. The Lord is all about serving others, which is even why Jesus came down and humbled himself to be like and serve us by dying on the cross for our sins. Humility and eyes fixed on the Lord causes us to love others. You must love others if you want to be holy before the Lord.

  1. Regard your body as the Lord’s temple

I cannot name one person who would willingly walk into a church and completely desecrate it(destroy it) from the inside out. Even though many people in the world might not consider themselves religious enough to attend church, they still have an understanding that it is a sacred place to be honored. It is the same with our bodies.

If we have the understanding that our bodies are also the Lord’s temple, then we will keep ourselves up with the highest regard. We will not allow foul(curse) words to come out of our mouths, we will not adorn our bodies with unholy things and we also will not allow other people to misuse/mistreat our bodies as well. We are a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit and He deserves a well kept home.

“Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” - 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Becoming holy before the Lord is a great thing to go over after. There is so much honor and favor stored up for those who seek to do right before the Lord and His attention is waiting to be drawn to them. Seek Him and go after being holy before the Lord with all your strength! It will be well worth it!

“For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him, and to keep His commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.”- Deuteronomy 30:16
