How to Overcome Being Stuck in the Middle of Fear

Being stuck in the middle of fear

If there is anyone who is sympathetic to those who are battling fear, it is me. I have spent the vast majority of my life dealing with fear in many different areas. It started with the typical childhood fears of the dark and then it branched into insecurity and the fears of being judged by others etc. Fear is probably the most crippling spirit that there is. It stagnates you and can completely hold you back from going anywhere further in your life. If you are looking for a way through it, here’s how:

Remember the Word of God

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and of love, and of a sound mind." - 2 Timothy 1:7

This is a well known Scripture on fear. Many do not realize the true power that comes from using Scriptures to help us overcome the enemy. I’ve even had dreams where I’m quoting Scripture against the enemy and He wasn’t able to harm me.

When you are in the middle of a situation and the enemy starts to make you afraid of the outcome, always go back to the Word of God and remember that the fear is not coming from Him. Fear comes from the enemy. He is trying to hinder you in your life and block you from going forward. Fear is not apart of your personality, nor is it natural to be afraid. God made us without fear. His power, love, and sound mind that He has given us will help you through every situation that you face, but you must remember to use them and not give into the fear that you feel.

Repent for allowing fear to enter into your heart

Since we know that fear is not coming from the Lord, but instead the enemy, we can recognize it as a sin. Fear is a sin because it is the opposite of faith and trust in God. We all get attacked by the enemy so there is no need to feel ashamed, but once you have recognized that fear, repent to God for allowing it to enter into your heart. The enemy will torment our minds with fearful thoughts but once we receive it into our hearts, it starts to control us. You go from thinking fear to actually feeling fear.

Pray

After you have repented for allowing fear to enter into your heart regarding that situation or in your life in general, ask the Lord to remove it from your heart. God is an active God. Many times we say a prayer and then we quickly move on with our day without allowing the Lord time to minister to us and to help us overcome in that very moment. Relax and give God the time to deliver you from that fear after you ask Him to.

Once the Lord is done ministering to you, ask Him for what you need. You may need boldness and courage to speak up to others. You may need confidence to continue on in what He asked you to do. You may just need to trust in Him that everything will be okay. Whatever your need may be, ask Him and He will supply.

Remember His testimonies

My previous mentor used to always say to remember God. Remember His testimonies. Remember His faithfulness. Remember what He has done for you. If you keep forgetting all of the ways that He has helped you in the past, every time you come to a situation, you’ll be shaky in your trust of God. Remembering Him gives you a foundation to build upon.

Even if you are new to the faith, find testimonies of others that are similar to what you are going through and use those to help you hold onto Him. You can find testimonies in the Bible or you can simply do a quick search on Youtube. Our resources are endless today.

Take the leap of faith

Depending on your situation, you may just need to take that leap of faith! Don’t let fear hinder you in what you should be doing next. Have faith and jump! The Lord will catch you, just trust in Him.

Faith can also be found in waiting. Sometimes our victory over fear looks like us sitting back and allowing the Lord to fight our battle in that moment. Whatever your faith move looks like to you, do it in all confidence that the Lord and all of Heaven is on your side.

And remember…

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."- 1 John 4:18
