The Hopes and Dreams of the Saints Before Us

the saints before us- hopes and dreams

Pursue your dreams”, is often a quote that we hear now. So many are chasing after success and fame/influence with others. We want to be seen, heard, and acknowledged by people. I’m not saying that pursuing your dreams are inherently evil or wrong, but what were the hopes and ‘dreams’ that the Saints before us pursued? Who even are the Saints?

The Saints are the Lord’s people; His chosen ones who serve Him and choose to be righteous. As Christians, true followers of Christ, we are His saints as well. If we are going to follow Him, it is important that we understand the life and pursuits of those who have gone before us just as Scripture provides us- a peek into the lives of those who share the same faith.

Isaiah 61 states: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” This is the same Scripture that Jesus quoted in Luke revealing that He is the fulfillment of this prophecy.

The Saints hoped and dreamed that they would see Jesus. Although they did not know that it was Him specifically who they were looking for, which is why many people did not recognize Him.

They hoped for freedom, a deliverer, a healer, and favor from the Lord. They longed for Jesus- the one who came to bring the good news and was the good news. The one who brought forgiveness and redemption to all of us held captive by sin, even though we didn’t know we were captive. The one who healed the blind, cast out devils, and touched those whom no one would touch. His name is Jesus and that is whom the Saints hopes and dreams were wrapped up in.

They sought after the one thing that mattered. Did they as people maybe have some other aspirations they were hoping to achieve- sure! But in their lives, you could see the one thing on their heart that mattered the most- the Lord. Their lives, customs, and traditions were all dedicated to Him and they knew the importance of serving Him.

Maybe our focus has gotten off in pursuing what we feel matters the most to us- the fame/influence, money, success, proving others wrong or ourselves right. Maybe we need to consider the one hope of the Saints before us and pursue Jesus like never before. We are in a time where relatively speaking it is EASY to pursue Him. He shows up willingly for those who hunger and ask for it. He longs to be with us. The Saints hoped and dreamed for something(one) that we have access to now. Let us do everything we can to pursue Him with all we have waiting until the ultimate redemption of all the saints before us and in the future.

Pursue Him today, He is waiting for you
