“Well if my sins have already been
forgiven, why can’t I just continue to sin?” This is a question that I have come across in many Christian discussion boards, as well as across social media. It is a valid question for those who don’t completely understand and/or may be new to the Christian faith. Initially, a short answer could be, “because it’s not
right.” But let’s face it, people can come up with their own definitions of what’s right vs wrong and that doesn’t really help you to connect with the deeper truth behind the question.
What people are really wanting to know is, "If God is so great & loving and my sins are forgiven, then how come I can't continue to do the things that are making me happy?". Here is why:
“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” Romans 6:1-2 NIV
There Is No Lasting Happiness In Sin
First, let's look at what sin does for you. Believe it or not, gossip, lying, fornication, selfishness, and etc. have a similar relation to what drug addicts experience. You try it once, believing that everything will be okay because you're strong enough to control yourself and 'it's not that big of a deal'. Until later on you realize that it has quickly taken over your life and what once seemed to be easily voluntary for you, now seems to be a normal uncontrollable way of living. This is how the devil gets us; we become trapped in this way of living that is not only hurting us but can hurt those around us also.
Just like with drugs, sin feels good within that moment but after it's over, it will leave you in a place of continuously needing to experience it over and over again, due to a lack of fulfillment.
Due to the lack of submission to God's will and His truth, we end up living in a 'lifestyle' of sin that consistently leaves us empty on a daily basis. Ever caught yourself saying, "I just feel like something's missing in my life"? It's the deeper intimacy with God that's missing and you cannot reach that fulfillment by living in sin. This is why it is important to live within God's will and strive for righteousness so that we don't become slaves to what the enemy tries to convince us is "normal".
Righteousness is a form of love & gratitude

Oftentimes, our focus can be heavily based on God’s love for us, which isn’t wrong, because He does. However, we also need to think about what our love for Him looks like.
Let’s say you got into a car wreck, which you were at fault for. Thankfully, you and the other driver made it out safely with only damage done to the cars. A family friend of yours hears about what happened to you and they not only pay to fix your car, but they also pay for your ticket as well. The only thing that they asked of you after all was said and done, was to be careful as to how you drive from now on. Now with this one request, do you choose to show your gratitude for what they did for you by continuing to drive recklessly, putting yourself and others in danger again, or do you make every effort you can to drive according to the laws and regulations already set in place? Hopefully, your answer is the second option, because by doing this, you’re not only keeping with their request, but you’re also helping to keep you and those around you safe.
This is the same thing that we should do with God- keeping up righteousness as a form of gratitude and love to Him for what He has done for us. Rest assured and don't feel as if you will be missing out on anything. There is so much more on the other side of obedience that will leave you with much joy and peace!
"Let every activity of your lives and every word that comes from your lips be drenched with the beauty of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One. And bring your constant praise to God the Father because of what Christ has done for you!" - Colossians 3:17 TPT
