Fear: Overcoming Fear In Your Finances

Lacking financial resources can be tough and overwhelming. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you begin to get rid of your financial fears.

One of the biggest areas where we tend to have fear is in our finances. A poor financial situation can leave us mentally stuck in the past meditating on our poor spending choices that were either in our control or out of it. Whether you are facing student debt, medical bills, or just a lack of finances period, it can be hard to see the sunnier side of things when you feel so trapped physically. Not to mention that due to inflation, some families' financial situations have gone from bad to worse.

Although this is not something that can be 100% improved overnight, there are some strategies that you can use to begin to trust God more in your finances and remove the spirit of fear that looms over your wallet.

Step 1: Figure Out What You're Afraid of and Why

In order to effectively tackle this dilemma, you must be able to identify what 'hold' fear has on you. Are you afraid of failure and of what others may think of you? Are you afraid that you might not be able to afford a house or car in your future? Or are you simply afraid that you may not be able to provide for your family in the ways that you should? Whichever one suits you, just understand that the only thing you can actually have control over is your present-day situation. Fear makes you focus on imaginative potential dangers in the future. Worrying about the future proves to be a trap from the enemy because there can be so much uncertainty in what we don't see ahead.

"Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes." - Matthew 6:34 MSG

If you can figure out what the spirit of fear is making you afraid of, then you are already a step up from where you started. You can then use that self-knowledge to craft a plan to conquer the 'gloom and doom' of your finances.

Step 2: Remind Yourself of the Word of God

As believers, we know and understand the importance of being rooted in the word of God. For every fear/worry, there is a comforting remedy in the Bible. Here are some examples of Scripture that you can remind yourself of daily either by speaking them or having them posted throughout your home:

  • "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want." - Psalms 23:1 KJV

  • "Cast your burden on the Lord [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (slip, fall, fail)." - Psalms 55:22 AMP

  • "Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your Heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are?" - Matthew 6:26 NLT

  • "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Philippians 4:13 KJV

  • "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."-Philippians 4:19 KJV

  • "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Psalms 23:4 KJV

  • "Do not fear [anything], for I am with you; Do not be afraid for I am your God. I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you; I will certainly take hold of you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10 AMP

Step 3: Evaluate Your Past & Consider Your Present

Since fear keeps you looking at what could possibly be ahead, taking a look at your past and present helps you to be able to partner with God in creating a brighter future. You know yourself best and even your family line best! What bad habits brought you to the financial place that you are in now? Are those habits still with you here in the present? Take a look at your finances and figure out what things you can cut back on and what things you can't live without.

Once you have your evaluation done and double-checked, spend time sitting before God confessing to Him about the mistakes you've made in your finances. Ask for His forgiveness and invite Him in to help you exercise wisdom in your spending or work ethic if you've had trouble with being lazy and not wanting to work.

If there is a another spiritual reason for your financial situation, like a curse of poverty or word curses that you, yourself, have spoken over your finances, ask the Lord to remove that curse from off of your finances. Before you know it you will soon see an increase!

Step 4: Set Your Financial Goals/Needs in Place

In order to get to the place where you desire to be financially, you must come up with a plan. Your goal might be to pay off more of your student debt so that you don't feel anxious every time you look at that number. Or your goal could be to have more money left over at the end of the month to help with the next month's bills.

Whatever your goal may be, let me tell you - it is achievable! Just grab your pen and paper and some time alone sketching out what transformation you would like to see in your finances. Be sure to include the steps you will take to get there, as well as the date you would like to have this goal completed if it applies.

Also, remember that God is the ultimate helpmate! Include Him in your plan and talk to Him about it. He alone has the capability of getting you to your goal much faster than you planned.

Step 5: Seek Guidance

Fortunately, God did not put us on this Earth to accomplish things alone. There are so many great resources out there to help you with becoming more financially prosperous. If you're creative then you can use digital design software to create templates that will better help you to organize your money.

There are also well-known systems such as Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey and the Zero-Based Budget system (this is the one I use), that can help you with better maintaining some structure and order.

Ultimately, to begin fighting fear in your finances, you must start by taking action. You can't win a fight if you don't get into the ring! I challenge you to start today by putting aside your financial fears & worries and begin working towards a better financial future for you and your family.

I'll be praying for your success!
