(How to Remain in Joy)

The Word says that the joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10) and to rejoice always (Philippians 4:4). But how do we do that?


I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to remain joyful especially when things are not going my way and it feels like the world is against me. I’ve even had plenty of times of disappointment and displeasure where there was no joy to be found in me. Well, this morning the Lord invited me into a conversation with Him and here is what He shared on His joy. 


  1. Joy is a gift

The Lord gives us the gift of joy whenever He wants us to be happy. Oftentimes, I have witnessed others and even myself have experienced times of laughing in church, that seemed almost unexplainable. There was nothing at all that happened that was funny, but laughter and happiness just washed over me. That was His joy. Believe it or not, the Lord is joyful and He smiles all the time. He is not a depressed God, who walks around sadly looking at the Earth or sits in anger, although those things are not removed from Him. 


Jesus said that God is a good Father and that He gives good gifts to His children.

"If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!" -Matthew 7:11

How could He give us something that didn’t belong to Him in the first place? Him sharing His joy with us, is His way of inviting us to partake in a portion of Him. He is constantly desiring us and since He is happy, He wants us to be happy too.


  1. Focusing on good keeps us in Joy

During our conversation, I asked the Lord how come some people are always happy no matter what happens to them. Even if they go through some hard times, they are always right back to smiling soon after. He told me “they focus on good things”.


In order to stay joyful, we have to focus on good things. 


After He told me this, I of course was reminded of the Scripture in Philippians 4:8: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things."


Focusing on good things, takes away the power of negativity in our situations. It is the negativity that bring us into hopelessness, despair, disappointment and etc. But not only do we need to focus on the good things, we also need to believe in them. It will feel very fake and forced if you try to make yourself think good thoughts about your situation, meanwhile your heart is filled disappointment and unbelief from it. This is where your belief and faith in God has to kick in!


Do you believe that He is good?

Do you believe that He can make a way?

Do you believe that He is with you?

Do you believe that your circumstances could change for the better soon and very soon?


You have to stir up your faith and start believing in the good, because He is God and NOTHING is too hard for the Lord!


Even if you are waiting long, do not be disappointed! You have to believe that your promise is coming and that it will happen soon. If you believe that God is faithful, then you know that He will not leave your promises unfulfilled. 


So here is your challenge: take your disappointments, insecurities, and impatience to the Lord and talk to Him about it. He will either reveal something to you about them or He will comfort you through them. Then muster up your faith to focus on the good things of your life so that you can remain in joy. 



"Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." - John 15:4-11


"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13
