Seeing the Lord's Goodness Through Adversity

(A study on King David)

God is good through hard times and adversity
“I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” - Psalm 34:1

Psalm 34 is another beautiful psalm of King David declaring that he would still praise God through the midst of everything- every good time, hard time, sad time, and even during the times that he may not have felt like it.

But how is it that David had this heart posture towards God? How is it that through the psalms we can see him declaring the Lord’s goodness even through all of the persecution he faced?

In Psalm 143, David declares:

“Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me. Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness”.

Many of us might not have enemies the way King David did, but you might have those who are unkind to you, dishonor your name/character, or just the common enemy we all have- Satan. David, while being sought out by his enemies, ran to the Lord for help, not to other people. He knew that it was only the Lord who could fully help him. Why? He knew that the Lord was good: “thy spirit is good” , and he was also able to recognize his own need for becoming upright. In other words, he knew he was a sinner as well, like his enemies, and humbled himself under God. He could trust in God to be there through his adversity because he knew God's character was upright.

We can trust God to help us through adversity, because His character is always good.

His character does not change. When it says in Jeremiah 29:11, “for I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”, this applies to every day of your life including the good and the bad ones.

David went from being hand picked by the Lord and anointed to be the next King, victorious in great battles with Goliath and other Philistines, to then having to run in fear for his life because the King wanted to kill him. That’s a serious turn of events. But when we look through the Psalms we get a picture of how perfect David's heart was through the midst of this adversity.

“Many are saying of me, 'God will not deliver him'. But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and He answers me from his holy mountain. I lie down and sleep; and all night long the Lord protects me. I am not afraid of the thousands of enemies who surround me on every side.” -Psalm 3:2-4
“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a place of safety in times of trouble. Those who know you, Lord, will trust you; you do not abandon anyone who comes to you.” -Psalm 9:9-10
"This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him." -Psalm 18:30

These Scriptures do not even fully scratch the surface of King David’s accounts of the Lord’s goodness. We can trust God. He will protect the righteous. He will save His people. He has not left your side, even though it may feel like it.

Was King David perfect in all he did? No. He was a sinner just like us, but his heart was righteous before the Lord and he knew that He was good even through the midst of adversity.

Can you share a time where you saw God be good to you through a hard time?
